Let our stage be your classroom!

Virginia Stage Company chooses productions that coordinate with school curricula. Students are provided significantly discounted tickets to attend student matinees in the historic Wells Theatre. SOL-based study guides are researched and created by the Education team and provided to each teacher prior to attending the show. We will gladly arrange an in-school discussion about the production for students and educators prior to your selected performance. Our award-winning directors, designers, and actors participate in a talk-back session with the students directly following each performance giving students an opportunity to interact with professional artisans & technicians.

Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play has stood the test of time and remains one of the top produced and cherished shows in the American canon. Through humor and exceptionally powerful storytelling, audiences are transported to the small town of Grover’s Corners to follow the journey of its residents as they grow up and experience the beauty and heartbreak of life. This new take on an American classic proves to highlight what makes this little town enduringly iconic and not so different from Hampton Roads.

Adapted by Patrick Mullins, it wouldn’t be the holidays without Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at the Wells Theatre. Experience the childlike wonder fo this heartwarming story that follows the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future as they take Ebenezer Scrooge on a journey of redemption where he learns the power of kindness and compassion.

TONI MORRISON'S THE BLUEST EYE
March 20 & 21, 2019 at 10:30AM

Adapted by Lydia R. Diamond from Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Toni Morrison’s first novel, this play explores race and class during the post-Great Depression era. Young Pecola Breedlove prays for Shirley Temples’ blue eyes, sure that love and acceptance will follow; but for a young black girl in Ohio in the 1940s, fitting in is easier wished for than done. This poetic narrative illuminates the destructive powers of racism, colorism, and how the dynamics of family and community can lift us up or tear us down. Produced in collaboration with Norfolk State Theatre Company.

ROALD DAHL'S MATILDA THE MUSICAL

With book by Dennis Kelly, music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, this musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic book tells the story of Matilda Wormwood, a young girl with a sharp wit and love for books. With her special brand of ingenuity, she dares to stand against the tyranny of adults who seek to crush her imagination. This multi-Tony award-winning musical provides the perfect opportunity for collaboration between Virginia Stage Company and The Governor’s School for the Arts to highlight our local students alongside some of the top professional actors from around the country.

Sense & Sensibility

February 5 & 6, 2020 @ 10:30am Jane Austen’s words comes to life again in the comedic follow up to the best-selling play in Virginia Stage history, Pride and Prejudice. After their father's sudden death leaves them destitute, the Dashwood sisters must navigate the gossipy world of late 19th century England. Full of humor and bold theatricality, this energetic take on the classic follows the sisters’ journey as they learn the importance of both sense and sensibility in a world where love and money aren’t mutually exclusive. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

April 22 & 23, 2020 @ 10:30am The playwright of Pulitzer Prize-winning A Streetcar Named Desire paints a portrait of a steamy Mississippi south. At Big Daddy’s birthday, family ties and undercover lies come to surface as Maggie the Cat, infiltrates her husband Brick’s homeplace. The two dance around the sultry secrets seeping through the cracks of their marriage. Between love, death, lies, and sexual tensions, will the truth ever be revealed? The Hobbit

May 27 & 28, 2020 @ 10:30am Travel to the fantasy world of Middle Earth, live on stage, as reluctant hero Bilbo Baggins takes the audience on an epic magical adventure ensuring fun for the whole family. When Bilbo is asked to leave his home to search for treasure, he encounters many obstacles along the way, including the legendary dragon, Smaug. J.R.R.
