Free Juneteenth Staged Reading: Sally & Tom by Suzan-Lori Parks

Virginia Stage Company invites the community to a free staged reading of Sally & Tom by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks on Friday, June 19 at 2:00 PM at the Wells Theatre.

Presented in observance of Juneteenth, this special event offers audiences the opportunity to experience a powerful and provocative work from one of America's most celebrated playwrights.

The Good Company, a scrappy self-produced off-off-off Broadway theatre company, is rehearsing its next big show: a play about Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson. Writer Luce is playing Sally; her partner in romance and art, Mike, is both directing the production and playing Tom. What could possibly go wrong?

With humor, intelligence, and theatrical ingenuity, Parks explores the complicated intersections of art, power, race, and American history. Sally & Tom examines who gets to tell our nation's stories, whose voices are remembered, and how the past continues to shape the present.

Admission is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, and reservations are encouraged.

This free staged reading is presented by Virginia Stage Company with support from the City of Norfolk.
