Session 2: June 29 - July 10 (6th - 8th Graders)
Magical Realism and Ensemble in The Weight of Wings
What happens when the extraordinary lands in the middle of the ordinary? Inspired by Gabriel García Márquez’s short story "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" and the adventurous spirit of 80s cult classics like The Goonies, The Weight of Wings is a play about a group of neighborhood kids who stumble upon a celestial mystery. As they navigate the curiosity and cruelty of their town, they must decide: is this "creature" a miracle to be protected, or a curiosity to be sold? It’s a story of a found family, the burden of wonder, and the literal weight of growing up.
In this session, students will explore magical realism, ensemble work, and physical theatre. How do you portray a being with wings on a stage? We will experiment with movement, puppetry, and creative staging to bring the impossible to life. We’ll dive into the "strange in the mundane." Students will learn how to treat the supernatural with total sincerity, a hallmark of Márquez’s style. Using The Goonies as a blueprint, we’ll focus on building a tight-knit ensemble. Students will learn how to create distinct, high-energy characters that feel like a real pack of friends. Even though the play is scripted, there will be opportunities in the camp to change the script to suit the cast.Session 5: July 20 - July 31 (6th-8th Graders)
Myths & Legends, Folklore & Fables
Ever wonder how Arthur became King? Or why slow and steady wins the race? And who in the world is Chessie? Focusing on the themes and structure of tales kept alive through different storytelling traditions, we will dive into why stories like Jack & the Beanstalk and Aesop's Fables have stood the test of time in Summer Camp Session 5: Myths & Legends, Folklore & Fables. In this camp, we will teach and build upon theatre and performance fundamentals through instruction, exercises, and games, while fostering the collaborative spirit of ensemble-work! Throughout our two weeks, students will work together to devise a group piece inspired by our learning to be presented to family and friends at the conclusion of camp. Together, we'll create our own folktale for the ages! -
