A Night of Music, Gratitude, and Community
Saturday night was one we won’t soon forget.
A packed house gathered at the Robin Hixon Theatre at the Arts Festival for a special Benefit for Virginia Stage Company, featuring members of the cast of Come From Away. After an extraordinarily difficult week at the Wells Theatre, it was an evening filled with music, laughter, generosity, and a tremendous sense of community.
The cast treated the audience to selections from Come From Away and a few special surprises, giving everyone a preview of the remarkable talent that will soon take the stage at the Wells.
Most importantly, the evening gave us another opportunity to say thank you.
Since the flooding at the Wells Theatre, the response from Hampton Roads has been extraordinary. People have donated, volunteered, shared our story, attended the benefit, purchased tickets, and reached out simply to ask how they could help. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has stood with Virginia Stage Company during this challenging time.
There is still a great deal of work ahead. We continue to assess the full extent of the damage and the financial impact it will have on Virginia Stage Company. But Saturday night was a powerful reminder of just how much the Wells Theatre and VSC mean to this community.
It also felt particularly fitting that the artists bringing us together were the cast of Come From Away.
At its heart, Come From Away is a story about people coming together during an unimaginable moment, opening their doors to strangers, and discovering what a community can accomplish when people show up for one another. Over the past several days, we have experienced a little of that spirit ourselves.
Now, we’re ready to share that story with you.
Come From Away opens Saturday, September 5 at the Wells Theatre, and after everything that has happened, welcoming audiences back into the theatre will be especially meaningful.
We cannot wait to raise the curtain.
