Wait Until Dark

wait until dark
by frederick knott
adapted by jeffrey hatcher
Directed by mark shanahan

January 28 - february 15, 2026

A woman alone.
A secret she doesn’t know she has.
And criminals who made a deadly mistake.

In a 1944 Greenwich Village apartment, a blind woman is threatened by criminals. As the climax builds, Susan discovers that her blindness just might be the key to her escape, IF she can manage to stall her tormentors until dark. This masterfully constructed thriller moves from one moment of suspense to another as it builds toward a heart-stopping finale.

This isn’t a story driven by spectacle or special effects. It’s a slow-burn thriller that tightens its grip moment by moment, where every sound matters and every shadow feels closer than it should. As the lights fade, the danger doesn’t disappear. It intensifies.

Wait Until Dark runs January 28 – February 15 at the Wells Theatre in downtown Norfolk.

  • Run Time: 2 hours with one 15-minute intermission

Emma
by Kate Hamill
Based on the novel by Jane Austen
Directed by Tom Quaintance

October 22 -november 9, 2025

Emma Woodhouse is clever, educated, and energetic… and about to go mad with idleness. In a time when respectable ladies are expected to sit quietly at home, Emma desperately longs for projects—and prides herself on matchmaking, much to the chagrin of her friend Mr. Knightley. But where Emma’s considerable energies focus, screwball comedy follows! A fresh and funny new take on a treasured classic.

  • Run Time: 2 hours and 25 minutes with one 15-minute intermission

Every Brilliant Thing: The Tour

Back by popular demand!

The story blends comedy, improv, and audience interaction to tell one individual's story of growing up in the shadow of their mother's struggle with suicidal depression. Surprisingly charming and delightful, Every Brilliant Thing provides a life-affirming jolt of humanism, reminding us that hope comes from the miracles of life’s minutiae.

Thanks to the generosity of Sentara, Virginia Stage Company’s exhilarating production of Every Brilliant Thing will hit the road coming to a location near you! This one-hour powerhouse performance will be performed in and beyond the Hampton Roads area.

Any and all spaces are welcome to host a performance. Traditional theatre venues are not required, all we need is a large flexible room, that can host 30 -200 people. Whether you’re a school, library, community center, or art space, our production is built to travel and perform anywhere.

Fat Ham

presented by capital group
FAT HAM
By JAmes ijames
directed by jerrell L. henderson

January 29 - february 16, 2025

What if the hero of the story wasn’t who everyone expected? Meet Juicy, a young Southern queer college boy grappling with grief, identity…and now the ghost of his father demanding vengeance for his murder!? Set against the backdrop of a family wedding barbecue, will the poetic and sensitive Juicy lose his courage to get the answers he needs or will he find the strength to ‘his own self, be true.’ This Pulitzer-Prize-winning adaptation by James Ijames serves you a juicy blend of comedy, drama, and social commentary with a side of soul food; and reimagines this timeless classic with a bold and innovative look that shatters stereotypes and celebrates identity, togetherness, and the meaning of family.

“Delicious, funny and piercingly moving, Fat Ham is a celebration that’s as thoughtful as it is irreverent.”Daily Beast

“Hot and sizzling... A raucous, flat-out hilarious comedy... Fat Ham is a revelation.”
The New York Times

“Uproarious... an unalloyed comedy pleasure.”Wall Street Journal

“Don’t let that Pulitzer Prize fool you. Fat Ham is the most fun you'll have at any play.”
The Wrap

  • Run Time: 95 minutes with no intermission

Audience Recommendation: Fat Ham is recommended for ages 14+.

Content Advisory: It contains discussions of pornography, sex and violence; profanity; homophobia; and the N-word (spoken by characters of color).

“The tragedy of Shakespeare is replaced by something witty, moving and life affirming... Instead of the tragedy-and-then-some of Hamlet, this is a play that emphasizes life, and specifically Black queer joy, while interrogating all the things that conspire to negate the life and feelings of the central character... The play is a compact 90 minutes, but it’s as dense and thoughtful as it is light on its feet and irreverent.”Daily Beast

What Does ‘In Rep’ Mean?

Rep, short for repertory, means that one company of actors performs multiple plays in the same period of time, allowing multiple productions to be performed in the same week. Often sets and other production elements will be shared between the productions.

We are celebrating the holidays in 2024 with two fantastic productions produced in rep - A Merry Little Christmas Carol and A Sherlock Carol - both written by Mark Shanahan. We are the first theatre in the country to put these two plays in Rep, and they are made for each other! Sherlock Carol takes place several years after the events in Christmas Carol, and in many ways is Christmas Carol Part 2. Tiny Tim has grown up, and Sherlock Holmes is coming out of retirement to investigate the murder of Ebenezer Scrooge! The two productions feature the same design team and several actors will appear in both plays. There are lots of fun connections between the two productions. While we encourage you to attend both shows, you do not need to see one to enjoy the other. Check the performance schedule to see when each production will be performed.

Both shows will take place on The Wells Theatre stage!
